Jobs in technology are among the fastest growing in the U.S. And yet, for too many people a career in technology or at a technology company like Google is out of reach. It’s our goal to engage with aspiring technologists early and often– ensuring that anyone can see themselves in tech and can make that future a reality.

Expand early access to problem solving skills

To encourage long-term interest in tech, it’s important to reach kids early. But too often exposure to STEM curriculum in primary or high school is not always available or accessible. We support programs that get kids of all backgrounds excited about technology and its possibilities.

Black Girls Code

Black Girls Code focuses on connecting girls of color ages 7 to 17 to the world of STEM. In June 2016, the organization moved into Google's New York offices. Working from inside Google's office will let Black Girls Code tap into our resources for internship and mentorship opportunities.

Black and Latino K-12 students face many systemic barriers on their path to participating in tech. Code Next builds social capital in communities of color by getting proximate, focusing on community, and cultivating critical 21st century skills through culturally engaging tech innovation experiences.

CS First

CS First provides free computer-science lessons that target and engage diverse students in grades 4-8. Using the online videos, anyone—a teacher, coach, or community volunteer—can teach kids the basics of coding.

Made with Code

Google’s Made with Code has a simple mission: inspire millions of girls to to learn to code and help them see the possibilities of a career in code. To do this, we engage an ecosystem of like-minded partners. Together, we’ve supported millions of girls in taking the first step in their coding journeys through coding parties and projects.

Support skill building for college students

Support skill building for college students

A career in technology often begins with real-world opportunities and training. We focus on creating partnerships with collegiate faculty, providing internships, and facilitating scholarships that close the gap for anyone interested in STEM.

Howard West

Howard West is an immersive computer science residency program at the Googleplex for Howard University’s top software engineering students (and eventually for students from other historically black colleges and universities as well). The program is open to rising juniors and seniors in Howard’s undergraduate CS degree program. Howard faculty and Google engineers provide instruction.

Google in Residence

In partnership with computer science departments at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), experienced Google software engineers spend four to five months on campuses, teaching introductory computer science classes. First-year students learn about basic coding and debugging, simple data structures, and how to work with large code bases.

Engineering Practicum Internship

Google’s Engineering Practicum internship is a 12-week developmental program for first and second-year undergraduate students majoring in Computer Science or Electrical and Computer Engineering. The goal: cultivating interested students from historically underrepresented groups in tech through technical training and professional development.

Improving diversity means looking beyond just expanding access to tech and engineering skills. Through Google’s BOLD internship program, interns join Google teams across sales, marketing, people operations, legal and many others to identify challenges, collaborate, and drive meaningful change for clients and users– all while developing skills and building careers.

Scholarships

To help more students become future leaders in technology, we break down the financial barriers that might prevent them from entering the field. We offer a variety of scholarships for Blacks, Hispanics, women, students with disabilities, and veterans. Google scholars become part of a development program, which includes outreach initiatives to promote technical fields and increase the pipeline for the tech industry.

Sandbox series

Sandbox events and programs aim to bring first-hand experiences of Google to communities around the world—particularly those untapped by the tech industry. We create an immersive environment for experimentation, testing, and learning to give attendees a glimpse into Google’s culture and work practices.
